Amsterdam West by bike: Westerpark, neighbourhood streets and quiet canals

Amsterdam West gives you several reasons to stop riding. There is the old gasworks at Westerpark, brickwork worth looking at properly and canals around Prinseneiland where you might prefer to get off and walk.

We would build the day around a few places you want to spend time in. Start with the park, choose an architectural stop, then leave room for the water. You do not need to turn every morning into a tour of the whole city.

Start with Westerpark

Westerpark brings together green space and the former gasworks at Westergas. The old industrial buildings now accommodate cultural venues, cafés and other businesses. It is a useful starting point if you want a mix of outdoor space and somewhere to pause.

We suggest choosing one stop here rather than making a list of every café. Check the programme before visiting if you are hoping for a particular event. A park visit and an event booking are separate plans.

Leave time for the brickwork

In nearby Spaarndammerbuurt, Het Schip gives you a reason to look more closely at Amsterdam School architecture. Michel de Klerk designed the housing complex, and the museum explores the architecture and the ideas about housing behind it.

If architecture interests you, make this a proper part of the day. Looking at a building from outside and visiting the museum are different experiences. Check the museum’s own opening arrangements and tickets before including an interior visit.

Plan a visit to Museum Het Schip.

Make room for Prinseneiland

Prinseneiland is part of the Western Islands, with a history connected to Amsterdam’s warehouses and waterfront. It offers a different setting from the park and the housing streets.

We would leave room to explore on foot as well as by bicycle. If you want to stop for a photograph, find somewhere you can step aside comfortably. These streets are also places where people live and work.

The city’s visitor guide includes the Western Islands.

What about the windmill?

De Bloem stands on Haarlemmerweg. It is an option to investigate if seeing a windmill is part of your plan, but check the location before adding it to your morning. A point on the map can add more travelling than you intended.

Do not assume that seeing the windmill means you can go inside. Check visiting arrangements separately.

De Hollandsche Molen lists De Bloem’s location and visiting information.

How much should you fit in?

For an independent outing, we suggest leaving a morning or afternoon free, rather than promising yourself a fixed finish time. Museum visits, food and time off the bicycle change the pace considerably. Choose fewer stops if you have another booking afterwards.

This is a guide to places worth considering, not a tested navigation route. Use current cycling directions and local signs to connect your choices. If city cycling is unfamiliar, consider walking between a smaller selection of places instead.
