A first taste of jenever

Jenever, also written genever, is a juniper flavoured spirit made with grain spirit. Some bottles taste light and clean; others have a fuller, malty character. It has a connection to gin, but expecting every glass to taste like a dry gin can be misleading.

We suggest starting with what you already enjoy. Tell the bartender whether you prefer a lighter drink or something with more grain and body. That is more useful than trying to memorise every name on the shelf.

Oude and jonge: what is the difference?

Jonge: generally less malt spirit and a lighter profile. Consider it if you want a gentler introduction to the grain character.

Oude: more malt spirit and a fuller body. It is worth asking about if you enjoy the grain notes in whisky.

The names mean young and old, but describe the style, not simply the age. Barrel ageing is a separate question. Oude does not automatically mean oak aged.

What should you order first?

Keep the first order simple. You could ask, “I have not tried jenever before. Could you suggest one with a light flavour?” Or, if you prefer a fuller drink, ask which bottle brings out the grain.

Ask about the price and serving size before ordering a comparison. A tasting flight, a single glass and a guided tasting are different things. We would leave time to enjoy one glass before deciding whether to try another.
